Work Party 1st Saturday of the Month There is a monthly work part every first Saturday of the month at the range. We suffered considerable damage from the recent storms and need to clear a lot of lanes and repair a number of damaged target sheds. Email Range Director Kurt Allen at klgallen87@msn.com
April 2008 Board Meeting Notes: President Caufman reported that the Club is seeking another insurance coverage bid for casualty insurance. Steve stated he had received a call from a company wanting to buy out our cell tower lease for a lump sum. After considerable Board discussion, the Board would discuss it further when an offer was received in writing. Andy Ludwig reported that most everything was ready for this weekend’s Safari shoot, and that there would a work party in the morning to put up the targets and stakes. Morrison volunteered to get the Safari stickers made for the award medals. Andy stated he would like all submittals for the Smoke Signal by the 20th of the month. The Board discussed a variety of security options (locks, badge readers, etc.) for access to the range. It was generally agreed that the Club is losing a substantial amount of funds from nonpaying visitors to the range. Steve will continue to research the cost of installing the required fencing and electronic gating. It was noted that Dennis Jenkins had not consented to serve as the Tournament Director, so the Club is still without a tournament director. It was noted that there is only one tournament left this season, the June WA Games Target, plus 2 late season 3-D Saturday fun shoots. VP Marty Mullins reported that the club is at 156 members, representing 128 households. The Club discussed putting pipes in the ground at the shooting stake positions, so the rebar shooting stakes could easily be pulled and reinstalled as needed for shoots and mowing. It was reported there would be a Boy Scout merit badge workshop at the range Friday April 18th. Treasurer Micheal Ros noted the relatively high interest rate (8.75%) on the pro shop. The Board discussed researching it more and possible refinancing the loan at a lower rate if it proved cost-effective to do so. Board Actions
March 8th Skookum Board Meeting Notes The Board was unable to aofficially conduct business at the March Board Meeting due to lack of a Quorum. However, the four(4) Board members there (Steve Caufman, Don Morrison, Andy Ludwig, and Micheal Ros) discussed a number of items: 1. Agreed that it was a priority project to Paint for the roof and identified the special type of paint to use 2. Discussed the upcoming Boy Scout Archery Merit Badge workshops scheduled for 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/16. 3. Noted that the NASP Regional Leadership Team needed volunteers to coordinate NASP in their region (WSAA District area), and that NASP Tournament volunteers were needed April 12th in Wenatchee 4. Met with representative of the SCA Tournament May 24th. Skookum members would still be allowed to access the A15-A28 and B Range that day. 5. The Kent Moms club will use the range May 17th. 6. Made note to thank member Raphael Crenshaw in the Smoke Signal for donating the nice fridge to the Club.
7.
Spent
considerable time discussing various Merchandizing Purchases with the Club logo.
President Caufman has since noted that the Club has bought 25 LED flashlights
with our logo and 8. It was reported that the Tacoma Community College (TCC) had discontinued their archery program and would give their remaining equipment to the Club for archery education. What the Club doesn’t need for our archery education program will be given to other schools or nonprofit groups needing the equipment. Meeting of February 7, 2008 Great NW Archery owner Doug Hyder appeared before the Board and noted his sales were down greatly, and that there was a lack of patronage of the pro shop from the membership. He noted that Club membership was down. Board members noted that membership was down and that we needed to initiate a campaign in increase membership. It was noted that the Sportsmen Show, Lessons, Thursday night drop-in program, and NASP Program support all contributed to building archery in the area and club. The Board suggested Doug cater more to the needs of beginning archers and take more initiative to promote his shop. It was also mentioned that the Club has allowed Doug to host shoots and the summer Thursday night 3-D fun shoot without any range fee. It was reported that some members were putting good targets on top of other good targets, instead of removing the underneath target. Needed to remind members not to do this or otherwise waste targets. It was reported that Steve Coleman has made a stencil for a dart board and had stenciled one onto one of the older target mats. It was proposed that a dart board be stenciled one of the 20 yard bales at the flat range as a novelty target. It was noted that the Club’s IBO liability insurance was expiring. Reported that 10 IBO members were needed to get IBO coverage. Don agreed to email the membership to determine IBO membership. It was noted that the Blue cargo shed is not insulated and gets very wet from condensation in the winter. Tools and equipment more susceptible to rust. Discussed dehumidifying the trailer. No action taken. The Board discussed getting various logo products for resale or door prizes, such as caps and T-shirts. It was noted we need to paint the Club roof this summer and paint “Archery Range” on it to attract attention to the range. Noted that members working at the range need to put the tools and equipment away when done. President Caufman suggested expanding the archery equipment closet into the office area, and remove the desk and several other items from the office to make room. It was noted that a tree had fallen and damaged the fence. Kurt will contact a fencing company. Andy is looking into striping the parking lot and flat range shooting line, including painting the distances. Will cost +/- $500. President Caufman suggested replacing the padlocks/locks in the club house to reduce the number of various keys needed. The Board agreed. It was needed that the Club needed a better fridge for the Club House, and anyone knowing of a good used fridge should contact Activities Director John Littau. It was reported that the Club owes the IRS approximately $1,500. Action Items:
The Board discussed the current Pro Shop Lease terms. Concurred to keep lease at current rates during the remaining life of the lease.
Annual Member Meeting and Election of Officers Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of Skookum Archers Club and Range held Saturday January 19, 2008. Those directors in attendance included: President Steve Caufman Treasurer Michael Ross Secretary Don Morrison Communications Director Andy Ludwig Activities Director John Littau Grounds Director Pat Fernandez Hunting Director Kurt Allen Immediate Past President Dennis Jenkins Vice President Marty Mullins was excused due to illness. All applauded Kurt for this action. Past president Dennis Jenkins volunteered to assume the Hunting Director position. The Tournament Director position is still vacant. Past president Jenkins gave a recap of the year, including reports on the shoots during the year.
President Caufman noted that the Thursday drop-in archery education program continues to be popular and well attended. The Club enjoyed the BBQ provided by Famous Daves, and the variety of door prizes. Archery in the Schools Program Washington has kicked off participation in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) with 11 initial schools in the state, including 5 schools in our general club membership area. The schools are: New Horizon Middle School (Renton), Woodland & Hunt Elementary Schools (Puyallup), and Brookdale & Collins Elementary Schools (Tacoma). For three intense days, physical education teachers from these schools and interested archers wanted to obtain a Level II certification underwent training to implement the archery unit in their school PE classes. Skookum Archers is very supportive of this program and has pledged to sponsor one of the schools. For more information, contact Dave Mack, WSAA Trustee at large, or visit www.nasparchery.com
Member Notes Target Faces for Member Only Range. Due to the frequency with which some shooters use the Member Only range, it was determined by unanimous consent that the Club would charge $0.50 for a member that wanted a new target face for his practice session at the Member Only range. This would be on an honor system basis. Lock the Club House when you leave. Active Member need to be sure the doors are closed/locked when they leave the Club House. The doors sometimes stick and don’t always close and lock completely, so please close the door and check the knob to assure that it has locked completely. We would like to remind/inform all members that under the zoning, property tax, and other local codes govern legal use cover the range, we are designated as as type of natural preserve and habitat area. Thus, there can be no hunting on the range. This applies to deer, rabbits, birds, etc. There is a "To Do" list posted on the Club House outside bulletin board. In addition to your target assignment, those seeking work hours to reduce dues can perform any of the tasks listed on the "To Do’ list. For other work that needs to be done, contact Pres. Dennis Jenkins or Pat Fernandez. Grounds Director.
Western Washington Sportsmen's Show
For the past several years, Skookum Archers have hosted the annual Skookum Archery Demonstration Booth at the Western WA Sportsmen’s Show on the Puyallup Fair Grounds. We give both adults and children a taste of archery. Usually, more than 2,000 kids are exposed to archery at our demo booth. We have a large area where several people can try shooting a bow for free. We will use our Club education program training bows and arrows at the event. We will also have a fund raising target where archers can shoot (one of our training bows) for a chance to win a bow or gift certificate. We set out a jar to collect contributions to support archery education and to replace the targets, arrows, etc. We also set up an archery raffle shoot at one end. The prize is usually a new s bow.
Club Email List One of the fastest and cheapest ways to get information to Club members is via email. We have been compiling a member email list that is kept by the Publicity Chair/Smoke Signal Editor/Webmaster. However, the list is far from complete, and some of the addresses are no longer functioning. The list comes in handy when we have work parties and tournaments, and need to solicit help at work parties and tournaments. We now ask for your email address on membership renewals. Please send in your e-mail address to info@skookumarchers.com or drop a note off at the clubhouse or call a board member. We will use the address only for club notices, and will not distribute it outside the Club.
Targets.
Members are assigned a target on the range and are responsible for
replacing the target faces when they are shot out. Please check out your
target periodically to assure a decent target face to shoot at. Do not guess at
the proper size of the target. There are “proper” targets faces assigned to each
target.
The courses should have the following targets:
A1-A14: Field Targets, A15-A28: Hunter Targets, B1-B14: Animal
Targets, B15-B28: Safari Targets. If you need a replacement target,
see Doug or Al at the Pro Shop. They will open the
cabinets where the targets are kept. You should replace the target with
the same size that you remove. You can also consult the course listing in
your Orientation Manual. It lists the correct size and type for every
target on the range.
Members are assigned this small
task to help carry the work load at the range. This is not a difficult
thing to do, and it won’t wear you out to carry out a shot-up target and replace
it. Please take the time to maintain your target on the range. It
really takes a group effort and we need everyone’s cooperation. Thanks!
Target Assignments:The mailing label on your Smoke Signal newsletter shows the Target Assignments for ACTIVE MEMBERS. Life Members, Associate and Junior Members are not required to maintain a target area. CHECK YOUR MAILING LABEL FOR YOUR TARGET ASSIGNMENT. You will be responsible for replacing the Target Face when it has been shot out, picking-up trash in your shooting lane, and reporting any maintenance that needs to be done; grounds work (grass, trees, brush, etc.) that needs to be done to the Grounds Chair, and reporting any range work (target shed, shooting bales or shooting stakes) that needs to be done to the Range Chair. Replacement targets can be acquired by contacting the Pro-Shop; you will be assisted with finding the correct replacement target face. Please do not replace targets until they need it; typically this means that the center scoring area is shot out. Also, we can all pitch in on replacing the target faces on the flat range. Thanks for working together! Link to Board of Directors Page
