Where Should I Put My Tree Stand?

You’ve scouted an area, you found deer sign and maybe even seen your big buck. Where do you place your stand?

If possible, place several stands, using the one that works best for that day’s conditions. If you have scouted the area thoroughly, you know the travel patterns of your buck. Don’t place your stand directly over a scrape or other sign where you know he frequents. Place your stand some distance away, preferably on a ridge.

You will want to use scent elimination products when you are hanging the stand so you do not leave human scent behind. Try to hang your stand early so you do not chase the buck out of the area. You will want the stand to be located where you can get in without being detected.

Think about the angles of shots you will be taking. You will want to clear shooting lanes (again preferably weeks before the actual hunt). You should also know the distances from your tree stand so you do not take a shot that is out of your range.
